Literature Text

He descends upon the field of battle,
like a reaper among a field of grain,
and with every blow slays men like chattel,
blind to conscience in his pursuit of gain,
but his martial chant is mostly prattle,
and his teammates hold him in much disdain,
so though he cries for help in his pursuits,
they have long since resigned his voice to mute.
Type of Poem: Ottava Rima

The ottava rima was originally used for long poems on heroic themes, but later came to be popular in the writing of mock-heroic works. A stanza consists of eight iambic lines, usually iambic pentameters. Each stanza consists of three alternate rhymes and one double rhyme, following the a-b-a-b-a-b-c-c pattern.

If you've every played a game online, especially a first person shooter, this piece should resonate strongly for you. Especially since one of the most frustrating things about this kind of player is that they are usually very good and even when they aren't, they will play up their skills until you're ready to shove a controller down their throat. I find the simplest solution is just to mute everyone I don't know at the start of a game.

This is my third submission for the December Form Challenge from #ProjectDFC. You can read the rest of my entries here.
